Proxy server

Proxy Server

The purpose of a proxy is to intercept customers' surfing websites for various reasons: security, performance, anonymity, etc..

Provides a cache for web pages and downloaded content, which is shared with all computers on the network, with consequent improvement in access time for queries that match. At the same time free of charge to Internet links.

The cache usually uses an algorithm to determine how a document is obsolete and has to be removed from the cache, depending on their age, extent and historical access.

The web proxy can also filter the content of Web pages served. Some applications that attempt to block offensive web content are implemented as Web Proxy.

Many organizations (including businesses, schools and families) use the proxy to enforce the policies you or to provide network security services and cache. Typically, a Web Proxy or NAT is not transparent client application: it has to be configured to use the proxy manually. For both, the user can simply avoid changing the Proxy settings.

A transparent proxy combines a proxy server with NAT so that connections are designed in the Proxy without configuration by the customer, and usually without the customer know their existence. This is the type of proxy used by service providers (ISPs).
